Andrew McDonald: ‘Good writing is about a book that puts forward a kernel of truth'
Author Andrew McDonald on the importance of truth in writing.
'Good writing is about a book that puts forward a kernel of truth: a big kernel, a small kernel, there's some kind of truth. Whether it's a children's book that has a truth put forward about, you know, the nuances of friendship between young children, or a crime fiction novel that has a truth to say about the corrupt nature of institutions that have gone off the rails.'
'Every good bit of writing, no matter how fantastical or crazy it might sound, has some kind of underlying truth behind it that drives it. Some kind of truth that is either underreported or super worthwhile telling. That's the kind of reading that I like to do.'
