2018 Next Chapter recipient Yamiko Marama discusses the challenges of a writing career and how the scheme has helped.

The Next Chapter: Yamiko Marama on challenges in her writing career

'It's been difficult in terms of developing a writing career. I guess just kind of even knowing where to start, to be honest, not having done a formal writing degree. And not even having a clear writing process, it's just something that I've learned through reading books and just being interested in literature.

'So it's been really helpful to have a mentor that could work through ways in which I could have a bit more of a process with my writing, and just kind of knowing what all of the steps are in terms of accessing publishers and, you know, how to submit writing. Learning all of that stuff's been really helpful.'
